TELESCOPIC SPRINGS FOR BALL AND LEAD SCREWS

ARMOR UP

Protecting ball screws, threads, and guide columns against dirt, swarf, and mechanical damage requires a specialized type of defensive armor. Hennig’s telescopic springs fit the bill. Also known as spring guards or spiral springs, these coils of hardened high-grade spring steel ensure excellent protection, even when fully extended.

The key is an overlap of the individual winding of at least 40%. Built-in optimal resilience and our special manufacturing method ensure easy compression and extension. Horizontal springs have minimal sag and vertically used springs have only a slight lateral deviation.

TELESCOPIC SPRING ASSEMBLY AND MAINTENANCE

For horizontal applications, we recommend installing the springs with the large diameter nearest to the swarf accumulation area. For vertical applications, install with the large diameter at the top. The maximum deflection in horizontal installations will be about 2 – 3% of the maximum mounting length.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Telescopic springs are designed to protect rotating machine parts such as shafts and spindles from dirt, chip, and  mechanical damage and to prevent accidents.

Springs can either be made from blue carbon steel or from high-grade stainless steel. They are supplied with a light oil film which helps ensure frictionless operation.

Telescopic springs are ideally used over rotating parts where there might be chips present or where dust and other particulates may be bound in coolant, oil, or liquid. Ideally they are designed for lower speed operation of up to 40m/min with an acceleration of less than 0.5g.

It is important to specify whether the spring is used in a horizontal or vertical orientation as the springs are wound differently. You can mount them over end or, in some cases, wind them over a shaft in a retrofit situation (special installation instructions available). Centering flanges (also known as pilots and retainers) can be used as optional accessories.

Absolutely there are. We have approximately 1200 standard sizes available. Sizes that aren’t standard may still be offered as long as they meet the criteria. If you have particular sizes we would offer the nearest standard size first before looking into the exact sizes.
